APPLIQUE

Appliqué is THE technique behind the iconic Minimale Animale palm tree emblazoned swimsuit. It was quite possibly most daring and hottest swimsuit of 2013 and has been featured everywhere from the front covers of Vogue and Elle to the bodies of almost every celebrity including Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus and Kate Moss. Appliqué is simply a decorative design made by cutting pieces of material and applying them to the surface of another for decoration.  It can be hand stitched or machine stitched and has been around since sewing was invented.

CROCHET

Crochet has long been synonymous with 70s style and makes the ultimate boho bikini. Crochet is the process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. The salient difference between crochet and knitting is that each stitch in crochet is completed before proceeding with the next one, while knitting keeps a large number of stitches open at a time. It is an extremely versatile and popular technique, depending on the type yarn used it can create a variety of different fabrics – from lightweight and delicate, drapable fabric to thicker/ sturdy fabric or lace using string or cord.

EMBROIDERY

Embroidery is possibly the most widely used handicraft and is regularly found in fashion, interiors and artwork. The art of embroidery has been spotted worldwide and several very early examples have been discovered. Works in China have been dated to the Warring States period (5th–3rd century BC). Embroidery is defined as “decorating fabric or other materials with a needle and thread or yarn.” Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as metal strips, pearls, beads, quills, and sequins.

MACRAME

Macramé is created through the process of knotting rather than weaving or knitting. The technique is often used to create leather or fabric belts as well as unique and incredibly complex dresses. Macramé has appeared in the collections of countless fashion designers including Balmain, Christian Dior, Diane von Furstenberg, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Mathew Williamson. Beads and metallic hardware can be easily incorporated to create a more luxurious look.
